The Domain Name System (DNS) is like the white pages of the internet. DNS service connects users to your site.

The instructions in this User Guide chapter apply to domain names that are already registered with RescueGroups.org.  To transfer your existing domain name to RescueGroups.org see the How do I transfer my domain name to RescueGroups.org? chapter.

Opening the DNS Management Console

To manage your domain name's DNS records:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Click Services > Domains.
  3. Click Manage Domain Registrations.
  4. On the Domains menu, select Manage DNS.
  5. Click the domain name you want to update.
  6. Add, edit, and delete DNS records as necessary.

How to update your domain's Mail Exchanger (MX) record

  1. Open the DNS Management Console (see Opening the DNS Management Console above) and click the domain name you want to manage.
  2. To edit an existing MX record:
    1. Look in the list of existing DNS records for one that has a type of MX.
    2. Change the Target value for the MX record to the new mail server's name
    3. Click Save Changes.
  3. To add an MX record:
    1. Near the bottom of the page, enter the following information in the Add Record section:
      1. Name: leave this field blank for MX records.
      2. TTL: leave this field as the default value unless you have been given specific instructions.
      3. Type drop down: Select MX from the drop down.
      4. Target: Enter the mail server's name in the text box.
      5. Priority: enter 10 as the priority unless you have been given specific instructions.
    2. Click Save Changes.

How to change your domain's Name Servers

  1. Open the DNS Management Console (see Opening the DNS Management Console above).
  2. Click Manage Domain next to the domain name you want to manage.
  3. Click Name Servers.
  4. To use the default RescueGroups.org name servers select the Use default nameservers radio button.
  5. To use custom name servers, enter the name servers in the text boxes for Nameserver 1, etc.
  6. Click Change Nameservers.
