      Hello,

RescueGroups.org is planning an update around December, 2017 to allow Unknown breeds for dogs.  This request is managed here:

CMTY-296 - Allow dogs without a breed (unknown breed aka: mixed breed) Closed

Although the update has the same effect as what other services (like Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet.com) call "Mixed Breed" we've decided to call it Unknown breed.

We've received a lot of questions about this change, and I'll try to address them here.  If you have any questions you can always contact RescueGroups.org Support.

The change to our systems is very simple - the Primary Breed field will no longer be required for dogs.  There will not be a "mixed breed" item in our breeds list (this is bad and inaccurate data) but instead the first choice in the list will be "Unknown breed".

If the user selected Unknown breed for Primary Breed, but selects a breed for Secondary Breed, the Unknown breed will be replaced with the Secondary Breed.  In other words, a dog cannot be Unknown breed, and also some specific breed.

The functionality of the other fields, including Secondary Breed and Mixed Breed will not change.  By checking (or not checking) the Mixed field it's possible to list a purebred or multiple breed dog as Unknown breed.

The RescueGroups.org data will remain clean and accurate by not presenting a pet with an unknown breed with any specific breed selected.

For the developers that use our API, it will be up to them how to present dogs that don't have a Primary Breed selected.  The animalBreed string will continue to have a user-friendly breed description (ex., "Unknown breed / Mixed (short coat)".  We've already sent multiple emails to the developer's group and the API key holders concerning this change.

      Richard

Richard, thanks so much. The organization I am working with asked about this and it sounds like your team is addressing with this update. Thanks!
