How do I get my website in the google search engines?

I am wondering how I can get my website in the google search engines? I asked google about this and they said its up to the webmaster. This is their response.....

Also, when talking about a website showing up in the search engines, what it comes down to is the so-called Search Engine Optimization, which is generally performed by the developer of the website in question. What this means is making your website easier to appear in searches and to be placed higher on the result lines.

 

I really need to get our website in these search engines. Currently, when people google us in the search engine we do not come up at all which again can hurt us dramatically. Please advise.
