At times, you may not want to set a primary breed for your dog animal records. Or, you may not know of any breed that you want to identify as primary. In the past, the primary breed field was required when adding an animal.  Due to feedback from our organizations, we have changed this requirement for dogs. You may now choose not to identify a primary breed.

When you identify the species Dog on an animal record, the primary breed will automatically be set to Unknown breed. If you do not want to identify a primary dog breed, just leave that default setting. In our first example of adding an animal record below, you can see we have not yet identified a species, so the primary breed is not set:

Once you set Species to Dog, the primary breed value defaults to Unknown breed:

If Species is set to any other option besides Dog, the primary breed must still be identified:

This change only pertains to dogs. All other species still require a primary breed.

Dogs without a breed are exported to Adopt-a-Pet.com and Petfinder using the breed identifier: Mixed breed. In all RescueGroups.org services, such as our Website and Toolkit, these animals will be listed as Unknown breed.

IMPORTANT

If you do not select a primary breed but do select a secondary breed, the secondary breed you select will populate the primary breed field on the adoption sites. If you import an animal to us with a secondary breed without a primary breed, our system will use the secondary breed as the primary since that is how we will export it. The secondary breed is optional. You do not have to select a breed for that field.
