There are two ways that your quota is enforced (explained below):

  • Per-mailbox
  • Account-wide

Per-mailbox quota

Your service's quota is enforced as a total of all of your hosting space.  If you reach your total account quota you will no longer be able to receive (or save) new messages.

Assigning a quota to each mailbox is beneficial if you want to prevent one rogue user from consuming all of the account quota (see Account-wide quota below).  Each mailbox has their own configured quota that they must stay below.

Account-wide quota

Your service's quota is enforced as a total of all of your hosting space.  If you reach your total account quota you will no longer be able to receive (or save) new messages.

This is important to understand because you can configure mailboxes with an unlimited quota, and your total space could reach your total quota.  In that case, all mailboxes will stop being able to receive new messages.

Assigning an unlimited quota to each mailbox is beneficial by giving your users the flexibility to grow as needed, as long as your total storage consumption does not go over your allotted quota.
